What does this theory propose?
The interference theory of forgetting proposes that forgetting of memory stored in LTM occurs due to the interference of by other memories when being retrieved or learning new memories.
Proactive and Retroactive interference
Proactive Theory: When previously learned information interferes with the ability to remember newly learned information. i.e. when you get a new phone number but continue to confuse it with your old one.
Retroactive Theory: When recently learned information has the ability to conflict with older information. i.e. cannot remember your friends names in primary school, though you know your friends now.
Retroactive Theory: When recently learned information has the ability to conflict with older information. i.e. cannot remember your friends names in primary school, though you know your friends now.
What type of information is prone to interference as a cause of forgetting?
Information that is deemed 'similar' is more susceptible to interference as a cause of forgetting, in comparison to topics that are completely unrelated. i.e. students are encouraged to study unrelated information either before or after an exam.
